Corrective jaw surgery
Corrective jaw surgery moves the upper jaw, the lower jaw or the chin so the teeth meet properly. It is planned with an orthodontist, over months.
An orthodontist or a dentist usually refers the patient. The surgeon and the orthodontist agree on a plan before any work starts, and the patient hears the plan, the risks and the other choices at the consultation.
What happens
- 01
Step 1: A planning visit
The surgeon and the orthodontist look at scans and models, and the surgeon explains the plan, the risks and the other choices.
- 02
Step 2: Braces before surgery
Teeth are moved into the positions the surgery needs. This takes months, with the orthodontist.
- 03
Step 3: Surgery
The surgeon tells you where the surgery takes place, how long it takes and how long you stay.
- 04
Step 4: Recovery and braces
Rest, a soft diet and regular checks. The orthodontist finishes the tooth movement.
Comfort, choices and care
Comfort
Jaw surgery is done under general anesthesia. The surgeon explains who gives it and how you are watched.
Anesthesia and comfortOther choices, and waiting
Some bite problems can be treated with braces alone. The surgeon and the orthodontist explain what surgery adds and what happens if you wait.
Risks and after-care
Swelling, bruising and a limited diet are expected. Bleeding, infection and numbness of the lip, chin or face can happen, and sometimes the bite needs a second adjustment. You get written instructions and a number to call.
How it is billed
Jaw surgery is often billed to a medical plan, and braces to a dental plan. The desk checks both and gives you the estimate in writing.
