Anesthesia and comfort

Every operation starts with a local anesthetic that numbs the area. Some patients also choose a deeper level. This page says what each level is, who gives it and how you are watched.

How much you feel or remember differs from person to person, and we can't promise either. You can ask for a break at any time.

The levels

  • 01

    Local anesthetic

Numbs the area being treated. You are awake and can talk with the team.

  • 02

    Nitrous oxide

A gas you breathe through a small mask. It relaxes you, and wears off quickly when the mask comes off.

  • 03

    IV sedation

Medicine given through a small tube in a vein, with the area also numbed. You are deeply relaxed and may not be aware of the procedure.

  • 04

    General anesthesia

The deepest level, used for longer or more complex operations. The team supports your breathing throughout.

Who gives it, and how you are watched

  • Who gives it

Your surgeon gives IV sedation and general anesthesia, with a trained assistant who watches the patient. The surgeon explains who will be in the room before the day.

  • How you are watched

Heart rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen are checked throughout, and the team stays with you until you are ready to leave.

  • The permit

The state dental board issues a permit for each level of sedation. The surgeon's permits are listed under Credentials on the About page.

    Credentials
  • Escort and fasting

For IV sedation or general anesthesia, an adult must drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. The desk sends fasting instructions in writing before surgery.

Questions about anesthesia

Can I choose my level of comfort?

Often, yes. The surgeon explains the choices for your operation and recommends one. The decision is yours.

Can I take my usual medicines?

The desk tells you what to take and what to skip before surgery. Bring a list of everything you take.

What if I'm anxious about the visit?

Tell the desk when you call. The surgeon can go through the plan with you before the day.

Ask the desk about your options

The surgeon explains each level at the consultation, before you decide.
